Central and North Florida HIMSS held its Summer Meeting and Golf Event on July 26-27, 2007, at the Renaissance Vinoy Resort and Golf Club.

Keynote
Our meeting keynote speaker was Dr. Stephen Klasko, MD., Vice President for USF Health at the University of South Florida. He provided insights about ongoing initiatives at USF, to improve healthcare through a collaboration with United Airlines and the Ritz Carlton, studying how physicians learn and assimilate new information into their practice patterns.

The CIO Panel enlightened the audience about current projects and lessons learned, and included the following presenters, representing their respective organizations:
Eugene R. D’Amore
Corporate CIO, Shriners Hospitals for Children
Gene D’Amore is Corporate CIO for Shriners Hospitals for Children and is an accomplished information technology professional with extensive experience in the healthcare industry. In his current role, Gene is responsible for the development, implementation and support of information systems across the 22 Shriners Hospitals. He previously served as Senior Vice President for Technology Solutions Co.; Vice President for First Consulting Group; and Vice President and CIO for St. Joseph’s –St. Anthony’s Health System.
Gene holds both a Master of Business Administration in Health Services Administration and a Master of Science in Managerial Science and Management Information Systems from Marywood University in Scranton, PA. He is a founding member of Healthcare Information Systems Executive Association, and also is affiliated with several professional organizations, including the American College of Healthcare Executives, College of Healthcare Information Management Executives, and the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society.
Shriners Hospitals for Children
Shriners Hospitals for Children is a network of 22 hospitals in the United States, Canada and Mexico dedicated to providing specialized pediatric care, innovative research and outstanding teaching programs. Children up to age 18 with orthopaedic conditions, burn injuries of all degrees, spinal cord injuries, and cleft lip and palate are eligible for admission and receive all care at no charge – regardless of financial need or relationship to a Shriner.
George Evans
Vice President and Chief Information Officer for University Community Health
George Evans is the Vice President and Chief Information Officer for University Community Health, responsible for managing all functions of information services including telecommunication, health information management and biomedical technology. Before joining University Community Health, Evans served as CIO for Lexington Medical Center in West Columbia, S.C., and prior to that he was CIO for Coliseum Health System in Macon, GA. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from the University of Georgia and his Masters degree in Health Administration from Medical University of South Carolina.
University Community Health
University Community Health is a network of hospitals, which was created to reflect the combined strength and partnership achieved through the union of University Community Hospital (UCH) and UCH-Carrollwood in Tampa, and Helen Ellis Memorial Hospital in Tarpon Springs. The Pepin Heart Hospital & Dr. Kiran C. Patel Research Institute, located on the campus of University Community Hospital, is the fourth hospital in the University Community Health network of hospitals and is positioned to transform the delivery of healthcare with its all-digital technology.
Edward Martinez
Vice President and Chief Information Officer, H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute
Ed Martinez has been working in the field of Information Technology for over 20 years about two thirds of those years in Healthcare. He has served in different leadership positions within community medical centers, large stand-alone, Integrated Delivery Networks (IDN’s), and most recently a comprehensive cancer center.
H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute
The H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute has made a lasting commitment to the prevention and cure of cancer, working tirelessly in the areas of patient care, research and education to advance one step further in fighting this disease. Moffitt Cancer Center is a not for-profit institution. It includes private patient rooms, the Southeast’s largest Blood and Marrow Transplant Program, outpatient treatment programs that record more than 135, 000 visits a year, the Moffitt Research Center, The Moffitt Clinic at Tampa General Hospital, and the Lifetime Cancer Screening Center
Diane Gaddis
CEO & President, Community Health Centers Alliance, Inc.
Diane Gaddis currently serves as CEO & President of Community Health Centers Alliance, Inc. (CHCA), based in St. Petersburg. Diane has more than thirteen years experience in the Community Health Center environment, including both information systems and financial management roles. Formerly, she served as Chief Information Officer for the CHCA network while also fulfilling the duties of Chief Operations and Chief Financial Officer. As CHCA CEO and President, she works directly with the Board of Directors to develop business and strategic plans. She oversees all fiscal, information technology and general operations; she was responsible for managing all due diligence and contract negotiations related to Electronic Health Records selection and acquisition. Under her leadership, the network adopted strategies to insure that the EHR project remained clinician-driven and that over thirty network providers were engaged in the final vendor selection analysis. Day to day, she has a “hands on” approach and works closely with member management and CHCA staff. Diane graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of South Florida with a degree in Business Administration / Management Information Systems.
Community Health Centers Alliance, Inc.
CHCA is a 501(c)(3) member support organization, founded in 1999 under a federal Health and Human Services program designed to create collaboration models. Health Center Controlled Networks, governed by a board of at least 51% Community Health Centers, work to ensure access to health care for medically underserved populations through the enhancement of health center operations, including health information technology. CHCA envisions every member achieving patient care excellence by improving operational efficiencies and maximizing investments through growing a collaborative organization that shares best practices in which technology is a pivotal tool. CHCA members currently operate 77 health delivery sites and serve 52% of Florida’s rural areas. In 2006, network members provided 1,268,669 patient encounters to 311,489 individuals.
The Quality Challenge
The VP-CIO team from HCA presented their experiences finding creative ways to improve and monitor quality at their facilities.
Cynthia Sudol, RN, BSN, CPHQ
Vice President of Quality, HCA West Florida Division
Cynthia has over 25 years in Quality and quality related fields as a Director of Quality, Risk, Infection Control, Medical Staff Office, Case Management, and Education. Her experience includes both university and community facilities in Pennsylvania, Texas, Indiana and Florida (including the University of Pennsylvania at Hershey, University of Texas in Dallas, Parkland Memorial, Dallas, Hermann Hospital in Houston, and University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, University of Indiana).
She is an RN and holds a BSN from Ball State University. She is a Certified Professional Healthcare Quality. Sudol served in a consultant role with HCA prior to accepting her current position as Vice President of Quality for the HCA West Florida Division office in Palm Harbor. She has worked with the University Hospital Consortium, and is a member of NAHQ and CMSA. She has served on boards of the American Heart Association, American Cancer Society in Pennsylvania, Texas, and Florida. She is published in quality related literature journals and books.
Sheree McFarland
Corporate CIO, HCA West Florida Division
Sheree McFarland is the CIO of HCA’s West Florida Division of 15 hospitals and 16 Outpatient Imaging Centers. Sheree has 20 years experience in Healthcare IT and has been with HCA for 11 years. Prior to HCA, Sheree was Director of IT at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City.
She is currently responsible for 130 IT staff, strategic planning, budgeting and all aspects of IT management. Sheree holds both a Master of Science in Industrial Psychology/Organizational Development and a BA in Psychology from the Queen’s University of Belfast in Northern Ireland. Sheree is affiliated with several professional organizations including, the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives, (CHIME) and the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society, (HIMSS). She is also an active member of Rotary and a past president.
HCA West Florida Division
HCA is a network of almost 200 for profit hospitals in the United States, UK and Switzerland. The West Florida Division is made up of 5 markets with hospitals in each:
- Pasco-Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point, Oak Hill Hospital, Community Hospital of New Port Richey
- Pinellas-Northside Heart Institute, Largo Medical Center, St. Petersburg General and Edward White Hospital
- Hillsborough – Brandon regional and Southbay Hospital
- Sarasota-Doctors Hospital of Sarasota, Fawcett Memorial, Englewood and L.W. Blake
- Orlando-Osceola Regional and Central Regional Hospitals.
Implementation of an Electronic Health Record: A Look at Efficiency, Quality of Care, and Nurse Satisfaction
Laura provided a comprehensive view of how an EHR implementation affects the nursing staff.
Laura Banner RN, BSN, Nurse Analyst-Clinical Informatics, University Community Health
Laura Banner has been a registered nurse for 13 years. She received her Bachelors in Nursing from the University of Alabama-Birmingham in 1994. She was a nurse at Carraway Methodist Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama for seven years, and has been at University Community Hospital in Tampa since 2002. The last two years have been spent as a nurse analyst in the Clinical Informatics department. In this role, she has assisted in education, implementation, and support of acute care clinical documentation within Pepin Heart Hospital & Dr. Kiran C. Patel Research Institute.
She has been involved in two current research studies at UCH. The study being presented is a Proof of Value Study-Implementation of an Electronic Health Record-A Look at Nurse Efficiency, Quality of Care, and Satisfaction. This study was recently presented by Laura at the TEPR conference in Dallas in May, and has won a scholarship honors award for poster presentation at the Summer Institute in Nursing Informatics Conference on July 20, 2007. The article for this study has been sent to Computers, Informatics, Nursing journal for publication.
Chapter Meeting
Our meeting concluded with closing remarks from Susan Posuzar, Chapter President. We look forward to our next meeting at Health-First (Melbourne and Cape Canaveral) on November 2, 2007. Please stay tuned for details.
